The Love Life of Ernest Hemingway

Andrew Doob and Leandro Franca

Ernest Hemingway loved to consider himself to be “a man”, and a man he was…. a man of many wives! On September 23rd, 1921, Hemingway married the first love of his life; Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. She was born on November 9th, 1891 and on October 10th, 1923 gave birth to her son John (Jack) Nicanor Hemingway. Elizabeth lived to the age of 87 (she died January 22cnd, 1979), but unfortunately, her marriage with Hemingway couldn’t be nearly as long as her life.
Later in his life, more specifically on May 10th, 1927, Ernest Hemingway was once again married to yet another woman he had fallen for. Pauline Marie Pfeiffer was actually guilty of having the affair with Ernest that split up him and Elizabeth. It was only months after Hemingway’s (first) divorce that he had gotten remarried to Pauline. This marriage, although longer than Hemingway’s first, didn’t last forever either. However, before their divorce on November 4th, 1940, the couple gave life to yet another two kids who would live to pass down Hemingway’s blood. Patrick Hemingway born on June 28th, 1928 and just three years later Gregory Hancock Hemingway was born on November 12th, 1931. Unfortunately for Pauline Marie Pfeiffer, she died on October 1st, 1951 at the young age of 56.
Martha Gellhorn was born November 8, 1908, and 32 years later November 21st, 1940 she married Ernest Hemingway after he was involved in yet another affair (with Martha this time). Hemingway only stayed with Martha for 5 years and later the two divorced in 1945. They had no kids together, but Martha did however, live to the astounding age of 89.
Mary Welsh, much like Ernest Hemingway, went through many affairs and divorces, so obviously the two were just meant for each other. They met in 1945 and were married the next year on March 14th.  At this point, Mary Welsh who was born on November 9th, 1891, was already 56. But Martha was just barely half way through with her life at this point and in the end had lived longer than any of Hemingway’s wives, dying at the age of 95 on November 26th, 1986. She and Ernest had no kids together, but the (for once happily) married couple had no affairs or divorces either. Martha Welsh had lived with Ernest Hemingway until his death in 1976.
